In the end, the far-right motion won the race, doing a similar score as in July (179 vs 175), still falling far short the 361 (minimum) threshold for a motion to pass.

The far left motion didn't get the support of most of the far-right & barely any of the disgruntled socialists/greens.

On the other hand, the only thing that could potentially push the EPP to chill out, or at least not to cross any serious red line, is Merz.

He will not want to see Manfred's games in Brussels threaten his coalition with SPD. But so far he is aligned on the deregulation angle of Manfred.

Agreed, and that's what both Garcia and Hayer said during the motion of censure debates, but I doubt the threat is seen as credible by the EPP, because Sanchez/Macron would pressure them to back down if they ever did try to blow the VDL coalition and trigger a EU crisis.

The key question remains: while it is a successful strategy in the short term for the EPP, will there come a point where the S&D & Liberals say "enough" and flip the table, killing the VDL coalition ?

Manfred bets they will never dare but if there's one bullying too many, all hell could break loose

Yesterday's debate on the motions of censure was anticlimactic.

But it gave us a glimpse of what is sorely missing in the EU institutions: the spectacle of democratic oversight.
