I feel like we’re in the middle of a natural disaster that will only devastate specific groups while other groups complain about how inconvenient the humidity is from the comfort of their lifeboats

If you have a job, now is the time to hold onto it. I help employees with severance agreements, noncompetes, etc., and there's been a huge uptick in people needing that kind of legal work over the past two months. I've signed waaaaay more clients than usual. The economy is bad.

Congratulations! This sounds awesome!

I am lightly horrified by how many people have now looked up their books and found out their publishers (who often were required contractually!!!!) just... didn't register the copyrights on books. Not all of them! Just sporadically!

This is not just one publisher, I've seen all the big ones now.

Today is the day authors are learning how many of their publishers straight up blew off registering copyright and I feel like that deserves a class action suit of its own if it costs everyone their settlement money from the Anthropic suit... 😒🤬

This is wrongful death. There is no legal reason for Open AI to avoid liability here.

How do you know when a book idea is really good.

For me, it’s literally like a lightbulb goes when I hear certain words get combined. It’s not an image, but the words themselves.

Do we really need 50+ books each season that are in the same subgenre? When we beat these trends into the ground it makes for such a confusing landscape where people stumble from one popular thing to another without developing their own tastes/preferences.

What I find strange about writing and reading habits is that we've given up on the idea of variety. Readers (and publishers) are so focused on things that feel the same instead of things that feel new. This is accelerated by the push to chase virality and trends.

Ugh.

My doctor has requested more blood tests. My veins are really hoping this will be it, but finding final answers for my ongoing issues is taking forever.

If you could throw a few bucks my way, I'd be grateful. I'm at 95% of my goal. Thank you & please boost!

I think we underestimate how hard it is to write about complex topics when you know your manuscript is going to someone who may have no familiarity with that topic. How do I build this entire infrastructure for a novel when the reader has no foundation.

I just found out that it's #WorldSnakeDay, so I *had* to pull a stack together real quick: some faves redolent with reptiles from deep space to my own backyard. I prefer a serpent to a rat, but I'm happiest when they're safe between the pages. How bout y'all? What are your favorite bookish snakes?
A stack of books (bottom to top): EXORDIA by Seth Dickinson, THE UNSPOKEN NAME by A.K. Larkwood, MOTHEATER by Lin Codega, THE TROPIC OF SERPENTS by Marie Brennan, TWO SERPENTS RISE by Max Gladstone, LET THE MOUNTAINS BE MY GRAVE by Francesca Tacchi, IF FOUND RETURN TO HELL by Em X. Liu, REDSIGHT by Meredith Mooring

It’s weird to cancel Dostoyevsky in the year 2025. Most classics were written by flawed people. That doesn’t mean their work is without all value as a piece of literature.

And I explained it has to be internally driven. Sometimes I forget how different this is from every other job out there.

It’s very possible (and not unheard of) to have no idea why your agent signed you, or why your book got acquired, or to have an answer of any kind for whether your book met expectations. He asked: so how do you know if you’re improving? How do you keep going?
