Maybe Waid will turn this decision around or do something interesting with it but I doubt it. All in all not very impressed by his action run so far.

Waids decision to remove any blame from jor-el a la phantom zone is an incredibly poor, boring and ultimately makes Superman's relationship with his dead father less meaningful

One thing that everyone has to do at some point is come to terms with the fact that the idealized version of your parents (or other mentor figures) is not what they truly are.

In my opinion, doing this takes some humanity away from Superman. What I mean by this is that parents are not perfect people. Never have been, never will be.

Making jor-el into a perfect (or near perfect) person is boring. By taking away his morally ambiguous decision of using the phantom zone as a prison you lose inner conflict for Superman as he no longer needs to come to terms with the fact that his father is not perfect.
