When you are going to cut the “fat” or waste in organizations you need to go in and learn everything about that organization in order to determine what can be cut out. You can’t do that in 10 days like Musk is doing.

There has to be some federal oversight with the education department in the US. Otherwise, leaving it entirely up to the states will lead to great inequities. Some states wish to indoctrinate Christian religion in their schools; some states won’t properly fund the schools, and on and on….
