"dei medal" you might as well just put "n*gger medal" because that's what they mean to say
This is blood-boiling. Charles Rogers was awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam after being wounded three times leading the defense of a position.

My English-speaking brain was struggling just now to concisely express 'state of emergency' (because of extreme weather) in #German. After googling, though, I found 'Wetter-Ausnahmezustand,' a good equivalent. For obvious reasons, our Germanic cousin sometimes maps nicely to English, but not always!

My English-speaking brain was struggling just now to concisely express 'state of emergency' (because of extreme weather) in #German. After googling, though, I found 'Wetter-Ausnahmezustand,' a good equivalent. For obvious reasons, our Germanic cousin sometimes maps nicely to English, but not always!
We're under a state of emergency here because of #snow, and I thought, "How would I say that in other #languages?" I don't like to use English words in #Spanish sentences, so I'd say 'estado de emergencia por la nieve,' which gets the point across, even if native speakers would put it differently.

#UnexpectedEtymologies : I heard Richard Strauss' Alpine Symphony this weekend, and the #German title of Section 10 included a nice little bit of Germanic linguistic DNA that endures in English: Durch DICKICHT und Gestrüpp auf Irrwegen ('Straying through THICKET and Undergrowth'). #Linguistics

With my one-track mind for languages, I saw this and first thought, "Who else around here is interested in Received Pronunciation?" But of course this stands for a town, Roeland Park, and not the kind of speech younger people associate w/ Gandalf and Harry Potter. #linguistics #receivedpronunciation
