Of course agreed that the statue of Sean Russell should be an issue, and should be removed. In the same respect, it's worth being clear on who Herzog was and the acts he was seemingly proud to stand behind.

You know who's ironically to blame for all this though, right? Homo faber!

Yes, absolute mensch, and absolutely agree! He was here to speak at the below conference earlier in the week, then stayed on and spoke again today:

Speaking of contributions, John Bickle was singing your praises today in a seminar he gave, here in Bordeaux, about his in-preparation rewrite of the SEP philosophy of neuroscience article 👍

I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

You might be surprised re the 'real scientists' part...
In the last few days, repeated concerning signs of LLM wonderment seemingly getting the better of academics of the generations prior to mine. Food for thought for me with respect to how to most intelligently tackle critique of these algorithms that have been foisted into our collective environment.

As an aside, didn't he have the most remarkable voice? It gets stuck in your head for days. Like treacle. Every now and then I have to revisit some of his writings, and my brain now automatically reads it in his voice. Instant mental transportation to 1950s Oxbridge surrounds.

Calling Festinger's 1956 When Prophecy Fails the canonical text supporting cognitive dissonance is misleading imo. That'd be his 1957 A Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, which draws on multiple everyday examples and studies. It may also be flawed, but that's where the foundations are laid out.
