It’s good for science and scientists.

It’s a responsible use of taxpayer dollars.

It requires resisting peer pressure to submit to Nature journals.

Thanks @bacteriality.bsky.social for this helpful slide for microbiology journals.

📣 New bacterial order name change alert!

🦠 The uncultivated alphaproteobacterial order (formerly TMED127) is now "Methylaequorales" in @seqcode.bsky.social

📝 New AEM paper on these marine methylotrophs: journals.asm.org/doi/epub/10....

🙏 Special thanks @rodriguez-r.bsky.social & SeqCode team

This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

Excellent seminar talk today by Dr Elizabeth Leon-Palmero on her discovery of #photochemodenitrification & nitrous oxide production in aquatic systems.

2025 Science paper: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Check out her website for her impressive research & outreach: eleonpalmero.com
Seminar poster containing the text

Title: Photochemodenitrification Unveiled: Illuminating Aquatic Nitrous Oxide Production
Abstract: Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and the main agent depleting stratospheric ozone. During the last decade, its atmospheric levels have risen faster than previously estimated, highlighting the need to better understand its sources. While microbial processes like ammonia oxidation and denitrification are known contributors, our recent research has uncovered a novel
abiotic pathway-photochemodenitrification-where sunlight drives N20 production from nitrite in oxygen-rich surface fresh and marine waters. In addition, photochemodenitrification exceeded
biological NOproduction in surface waters. Our latest findings reveal that this photochemical process also occurs in polar regions and the tropical open ocean, emphasizing its global distribution.
Because it occurs in surface waters in direct contact with the atmosphere, photochemodenitrification
holds the potential to contribute significantly to N20 emissions.

Journalist Anas al-Sharif with his daughter Sham and son Salah.

Today's assassination of al-Sharif and four other Al Jazeera staff brings the number of journalists killed by Israel to 237.

Blue dots are UN aid distribution sites that existed in Gaza before the IDF and US mercenaries took over the process and blocked the UN.

Yellow squares are current sites.

The current system is aid theater and has created killing fields where dozens of aid seekers are killed every single day.

Yes. Outstanding. And “Persepolis” books. This one is in that same category.

Second email was the charm! Got reply from [email protected]
methanojen.bsky.social
But have any other Science papers been retracted based on that new policy? I sent the Science EiC suggestions twice. No reply either time.
methanojen.bsky.social
Yeah it’s problematic that Science singled out this paper when there are dozens (hundreds?) of examples of other Science papers that are now shown to be wrong. To be fair, they should have done a mass retraction. But that wouldn’t have generated as much click bait. 🤦🏻‍♀️
methanojen.bsky.social
I'm OK with the new policy as long as it's applied fairly. I pointed this out to the Science EiC last November when they began this retraction process. No response. Just re-sent the email today.
