Oh, and you don't have to do the copy-paste thing. There are tools which will do that extraction, often times for an entire 'batch' of documents, automatically. I imagine someone is doing that now.

If the redaction method only affects the image part but not the underlying text (bad practice!) then not only can redacted stuff be searched on, it can also be extracted in full. 2/2

Depends. 'Searchable' pdfs typically have the image part that you see and then an underlying text part (an OCR of the image) that provides for the search capability. 1/2
