If something like this were really going to work, the vote itself would need to be irresistible, with a generation of Californians raised on the dream of independence, and strong institutions ready to take the wheel from day 0

The thing is, you’d get people voting for this because they’re cranky about Trump, when this would really be a very messy multi-generational political project. I think you’d want to start with deeper work — myth-making, identity formation, institution building.
