So maybe, the Belarusian government, sent this guy on a student exchange visa to the chef school , and then he defected- because despite the conditions of the town, he was just rabid for the Red Sox and Aerosmith.

I hadn’t thought about that way ( being nice).
My take is speculation- Cold War spy stuff, and the hot bed of recruitment these schools are in that ecosystem.

I wonder who he worked for to get that visa (and settled in an Ivy league town)?
