another update about my mental health. once again: i am posting this in the hopes that it de-stigmatizes MH and helps anyone out there who needs help but has been afraid or ashamed to get it. #mentalhealth
a note that says: hello all! i am still in the process of changing medications (from an SSRI to an SMS) and i have to say: it absolutely sucks. withdrawal symptoms from one med combined with onboarding symptoms from the new med is a real brain roller coaster - nothing unexpected or dangerous, but it is a miserable experience. i have been able to get into the studio a little bit here and there which is good, but once again among the biggest stressors of this whole process is the difficulty i have in accessing my creativity and ability to focus. i keep having brief flashes of ideas and directions, but accessing them more than superficially is proving very elusive, which is very frustrating. the good news is that i have people around me who care and are supportive — and i think that is why i continue to post about this process on here: hiding mental health issues makes them so much more difficult to deal with. if you are dealing with similar stuff, i implore you to let your friends and family know what is going on — it helps. a lot. thank you all as always for your support!

just a quick update #mentalhealth
a note that reads: hello everyone! i have been quiet on here for a little bit and i wanted to give you a quick update: many of you know i suffer from anxiety & depression, and lately i have been having a very, very difficult time with my mental health, so i have recently started on a daily medication to help. the first month or so of starting an SSRI can be incredibly hard, and i can confirm that it sucks (a lot). but, i also know i have to stick with it and work with my doctor to evaluate and adjust as time goes on. hopefully i will see improvement within the few weeks, and i will be feeling better and back to my normal posting on social and my general mitch-ness. i am posting this now for 2 reasons: first, to let you know that while i am not OK right now, i will be. second, to tell any of you suffering with your mental health that it is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about, it’s a medical condition and help is available in a variety of different ways. if you feel like you need help, please find it. -mitch

a note about critique in #art and #design :
a book excerpt from 'how to be a design student (and how to teach them)" by mitch goldstein that reads: "Many people will disagree with me on this next bit, but I do not accept the practice of harsh critiques. You should not get torn apart in a critique. Critiques should not be brutal; critiques should be honest and useful. If you walk away feeling like garbage or like you were beaten up, it was not a useful critique. It was a belittling one. You should walk away from getting a critique feeling empowered and excited to make the work better, not defeated and miserable from the experience. 90 | how to be a design student It is up to both the givers and the receivers of the critique to make this happen. Last, remember that a critique is not a competition; nobody wins the critique. Everybody is there to learn and grow, and often you can learn as much from giving a critique as you can from getting one. This is why you should always pay close attention to critiques of work by other students, as there is much to be learned from discussing work beyond your own."
