You need a USB-SATA interface cable. I use 2.5" SSD's as floppies. In China, you have 20GB for $3 or so and much fster than USB sticks.

Still sticking with a UFS boot volume. I somehow don't trust the dependency of a ZFS pool as root filesystem. If required, I can activate anything via the installer live shell anyway.

This should already be the usual design but everything is kept monolithic and disposable to lose value in a few years. Same with storage. If you have 256 32GB disks and apply software redundancy, you have a unlimited scalable immortal storage volume as long as the units are for sale somewhere.
