Today was not just about shoveling dirt and snapping pictures—today was about cementing a legacy that will carry us through 2028 and far beyond.

Los Angeles doesn’t wait for the future to arrive—we build it.

I’m excited to watch our Convention Center get modernized, our businesses thrive, and Downtown LA, the beating heart of our local economy, get revitalized.

The expansion and modernization of the Convention Center is not just an architectural project—it is a declaration about the kind of global city Los Angeles intends to be.

There is nowhere you’re going that is more important than someone’s life.

Everyone must drive safely to make sure that no person or family in our community has to experience the tragedy of losing a loved one.

Let’s keep working together to fight for freedom, justice, and equality.

Today, we celebrate Mexican Independence Day during a challenging time in the U.S.

From our Madrina, @cd1losangeles, to President Claudia Sheinbaum, who became the first woman to lead Mexico’s 215th annual celebration, let this year’s El Grito remind us that when we fight back, we win.

It is especially painful that this happened at the close of a summer where crime was at an all-time low and progress was visible. Still, I am confident in the resources we have in place to keep building safety and trust, and to ensure our community feels secure moving forward.

Incidents like these are the actions of a few and do not define the people of South LA. Our community has worked hard to disrupt cycles of violence, and that work continues, alongside our intervention workers, law enforcement, and neighbors who are already comforting the families involved.

Our City is resilient. We won’t stop investing in public safety, our youth, and our joy.

For the fifth consecutive summer, we continued our South LA Strong programming from summer camps to movies in the parks. Thank you to all of our partners!

Let’s keep working together to keep each other safe.

We will continue to be vigilant every day to ensure all our schools are safe and secure for students, families, and educators.

The increasing frequency of such language creates a hostile environment, which prompted this need for formal rules to maintain a respectful exchange of ideas.

Today, the LA City Council voted unanimously on the Epithet Motion which restricts the use of inflammatory language in Council and Committee meetings. The use of inflammatory language is quite frankly disruptive, harmful, and deters others from participating.

Her legacy is rooted in activism, inclusion, and resilience, and continues to inspire future generations.

May she rest in power.

Recognizing deeper community needs, Thais-Williams expanded her advocacy to affordable healthcare and housing for minority women living with AIDS. As a leader on the Board of AIDS Project L.A., she helped steer the organization’s response in communities of color.

We mourn the loss of Jewel Thais-Williams, a pioneering force in the Black LGBTQ+ community. In 1973, she opened Jewel’s Catch One, the first large-scale Black-owned LGBTQ nightclub in the United States. ‘The Catch’ became a cultural haven in Los Angeles for over 40 years.

The California Republicans who voted to benefit billionaires at our expense are accessible by a freeway funded by Biden’s Build Back Better initiative and they’re up for reelection in 2026.

With power, you can choose to build or tear down.

What’s been touted as the Big Beautiful Bill will soon show its ugly face. Presented in the dead of night, passed without proper discussion, and hidden from public view—this bill will crater the national and LA economies. Hurting working families from housing, to medicaid, to SNAP, and education.

We understand the fight; we intend to stay in the fight, and we will not relent one single inch of our sovereignty, our dignity, and, most of all, our rights as human beings and citizens of this country.

Juneteenth is a day for us to remember the broad shoulders we stand on, to celebrate the dip and sway of the music that inspires us, and to appreciate the art and literature that tells our story.

This Father’s Day, and all year long, we must keep families together.
