MHF Foundation Chair and MHF Centre Director, Professor Mike Fay spoke today at ABCARA about the unique partnership that drives the MHF Centre - the Mark Hughes Foundation, the University and our community. Our focus is on research to deliver better brain cancer outcomes for patients nationwide.

A study has found a promising new way to attack high-grade gliomas (HGG), by targeting the cells surrounding a tumour.

The brilliant findings, led by Pofessor Misty Jenkins, Zoe Day
and Dr Ryan Cross are now published in Nature’s npj Precision Oncology.

This image of a paediatric brain shows collagen (in green), which is a key part of the ECM, with healthy brain (in pink and purple). Researchers hope that targeting components like this that surround a tumour could open new pathways for immunotherapies to better reach and attack cancers.

The cold snap coincided with a Brain Cancer Awareness event at the NSW Parliament, so members of the MHF Centre took the opportunity to don the new season MHF Beanie for Brain Cancer!

Our teams were up-skilled in #Statistics thanks to Dr Bryan Paton, Deputy Stream Leader in our Brain Cancer Imaging team. We planned, we plotted, we learned!
In the foreground is a laptop with text on the screen demonstrating statistics. A hand is on the touchpad, and a pair of black framed glasses are off to the righthand side. On the left, you can see another pair of hands working a laptop. In the background (but the main part of the pic) you see a screen with text explaining statistics. Off to the side is a bearded man with a black t-shirt who is presenting to the room.

Funded by the Mark Hughes Foundation since 2016, our Brain Cancer Care Coordinators play a crucial role in supporting everyone impacted by brain cancer, but as the following article outlines, we need an informed nationwide approach to rolling out trained Brain Cancer Care Coordinators nationwide.

The needs of people with brain cancer are unique, with specialised care required to help them, and their loved ones and carers, navigate the challenges of brain cancer. MHF Brain Cancer Care Coordinators provide dedicated and specific care for people with brain cancer.

With brain cancer research, we’re in it for the long haul, which is why succession planning and building the next generation of our research leaders is so important. It was so great to see so many early career researchers and students attend the 2025 International Brain Tumour Research Summit.
