Having worked with the current crop of undergraduates, "improved students' computer skills" is still nothing to sneeze at. A lot of them have grown up using phones and tablets almost exclusively, can't touch-type, and don't seem to know how to use actual computers.

I think a lot of muggers are just lazy chancers, honestly. I've been noncommittally "mugged" like 3 or 4 times -- I just kept walking like I didn't hear the person and they never did anything.

for anyone interested, @hammerandhope.bsky.social ran an article on exactly this: "An organized urban wing of the railroad called vigilance committees focused on protecting, supporting, and learning from fugitives. That education went in both directions..."

The Black People Who Fled Slavery Had a Lot to Teach Their Northern Allies
Black-led vigilance committees not only protected and aided fugitives but also learned from the formerly enslaved as they built a movement pedagogy together.

It's a thing, it's just also grounded in its own ideology.

That stood out to me as well. I expect it'll be the LLMs clocking that a lot of citations tend to be recent, so making up ones that are <5 years old -- and therefore might get harder to spot as time goes on.

Everyone approaches everything from an 'ideological perspective', whether they know it or not. That's what 'ideology' means.

She is rightly hated, and EVEN SO might still be our most severely under-hated ex-PM since Churchill.

That she is apparently good on trans issues is a sound condemnation of everyone else who fails to be, not a defense of her.

What are you TALKING about? As Home Secretary under Cameron, she made changes to the immigration system that laid the foundations for the ever-worsening cycles of bullshit for migrants that have continued ever since. As PM she pushed for the hardest possible Brexit despite a complete lack of mandate

I've been belatedly watching Mad Men, a show I never expected to make me think "oh no, it me" – but there's a scene where a communist is asked what he thinks of Draper's beautifully decorated and obviously expensive apartment, and his wife interjects "His eyes are at war with his politics" 😅

Like, Lolita is a genuinely good book. We analysed it in HS English as an example of an unreliable narrator, and because my teacher loved the prose. 'My Ántonia' is also a classic, but while I've not read it, from the description it sounds like it has v. little in common besides apparently pedo lust
