@miattygen.bsky.social Dana Nessel has joined 22 other attorneys general in urging the Supreme Court to review a lower court decision that prevents individuals from suing to enforce the Voting Rights Act (VRA). Read more at mi.gov/agnews
“If individuals are stripped of their ability to enforce the Voting Rights Act, everyday Americans will have little control in protecting their own right to vote. Relying only on the U.S. Attorney General to bring these cases puts communities at the mercy of political officials, and I urge the Supreme Court to review this decision to preserve the fundamental protections of our democracy," said Attorney General Dana Nessel.

After joining a multi-state lawsuit against the DOJ, @MIAttyGen Dana Nessel has announced that following the filing of the lawsuit, the DOJ has now dropped its plan to impose illegal conditions on nearly $1.4B in Victims of Crime Act grants. Read more at mi.gov/agnews
“As Michigan’s Attorney General, one of my main responsibilities is to protect crime victims and fight for their justice. The Trump Administration’s attempt to place unlawful conditions on critical VOCA funding threatened to deny survivors the support they need to heal and rebuild their lives. Those conditions would have also required that victims’ detailed personal information be shared with the federal government when demanded — a blatant invasion of privacy that would have been used to target victims themselves rather than their abusers. I am relieved this effort has been abandoned," said Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan has dismissed a lawsuit filed by anti-abortion plaintiffs, including Right to Life of Michigan, which sought to strike down the right to reproductive freedom.
Quote from AG Nessel:
“Medical decisions belong to individuals and their doctors, not politicians and special interest groups. This ruling is a reminder that our Constitution and the will of Michigan voters cannot be struck down because anti-abortion individuals don’t like the outcome. My office will continue to defend Michiganders against attempts to roll back their rights and protect bodily autonomy.”

Attorney General Dana Nessel warns Michigan residents about increased reports of scam text messages claiming to come from the "State of Michigan Department of Vehicles," which does not exist.
Quote from AG Nessel:
“These messages are scams. Michigan does not have a Department of Vehicles, and the Secretary of State does not send text messages threatening to suspend your license or registration. If you receive a text message like this, delete it, and do not click on any links.”

Today, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved yet another natural gas rate hike for Consumers Energy, allowing the company to collect an additional $157.5 million in revenue from its ratepayers. Read more at mi.gov/agnews
“It is disappointing that the MPSC approved a rate hike far above not only my office’s recommendation, but even beyond its own judge’s finding that only $142 million was justified.

Michigan families deserve a regulator that puts their interests first, yet this order still forces Consumers Energy ratepayers to pay far more than is fair or reasonable. By repeatedly siding with the utilities they are meant to regulate, the MPSC has shown a disturbing disregard for the struggles of Michigan families, trapping ratepayers in an unsustainable system that prioritizes corporate profits over their well-being," said Attorney General Dana Nessel.

Threats of violence cost local communities tens of thousands of dollars and can put law enforcement at risk. Whether made with the intent to harm or as pranks, they are real crimes with very real consequences.”

As part of a coalition of 22 AGs and the state of Pennsylvania, @miattygen.bsky.social Dana Nessel filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to block the Trump Admin from enforcing the “Defund Provision” within the recently enacted federal budget bill. Read more at mi.gov/agnews
“As we have seen time and again, the Trump administration is unlawfully chipping away at Americans’ rights and resources – this time the right to choose your own healthcare provider. In Michigan, we already face dangerous maternal healthcare deserts, particularly in the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan, where women struggle to access essential preventive care. Stripping away federal funding from trusted providers like Planned Parenthood will only deepen these disparities and further strain our medical system. I will continue to fight to ensure that Michigan residents have access to trusted providers who deliver their care without political interference," said Attorney General Dana Nessel.
