The advantage to "trump" is that it functions as a noun and verb, both of which are such useful shorthand. I love thematic alternatives but it's so clunky to be stuck with, "she top suited my lead," or, "I need to triumph the last three tricks to win." Top is my favorite alternative for this reason.
