Hi #Medievalsky,

Michaela and I have decided to put together a last minute #IMC2026 session proposal: *Dead Reckoning in the early medieval [?world]"

If you've anything on interactions with the dead (literary, historical, legal, etc.) and are looking for an (unfunded) session to join, let us know!

Hey! Are you still looking for someone? I hadn't got around to organizing a panel cos I've been so busy so if you wanted to put together a last minute one I'd be keen 🙂

@imc-leeds.bsky.social is almost upon us and since the app is now out, I thought I’d remind everyone of our 4 panels on the Merovingians happening all day Wednesday. We finally rallied everyone together so be there or be square! #merovingian #imcleeds2025 @beccagrose.bsky.social

What an amazing experience it is publishing a book 🥰 i feel so honoured to have been chosen to tell the stories of New Zealand's first women doctors. Thanks to everyone who came to our launch, I am still in shock that it is on shelves.

I am very proud to say that my first book "Against the Odds: New Zealand's First Women Doctors" has officially launched! We had an overwhelming number of people turn up to the opening lecture at the @universityofotago.bsky.social last night and we received wonderful feedback. Thanks for the support!

"No one knows which ideas will be needed to face future challenges and seize opportunities. But a community of researchers across all disciplines pursuing their best ideas is our best insurance for making sure we have access to those ideas when we need them."

Such disappointing news to wake up to... The lack of appreciation for the humanities was one of the main reasons i left academia in NZ and it's only getting worse.

Government's Marsden Fund cuts: All humanities, social sciences research funding slashed
Cutting all research funding for the fields is a massive step backwards, critics say.

Feeling very conflicted... Received the final proofs back from the copyeditor and much has been changed, including what i would consider my "voice" and a lot of sentences that now mean the opposite of what I intended... Is this normal when working with an academic press?

I now have a "readings" folder which contains a "currently reading" folder and a "currently annotating" folder. And another folder called "legit reading right now" for when i started a new research topic and didn't want it to mix with the old topic, but that is also filling up quickly 😬
michaelajaneruth.bsky.social
Does anyone else struggle to find the balance between researching (reading) and writing? I have so many half-read books in my "currently reading" folder because i read so slowly and then run out of time to finish them before i have to start writing to meet a deadline 🤦🏻‍♀️ #medievalsky

Reminded Gregory of Tours doesn't start his Histories with "a great many things keep happening, some of them good, some of them bad" (as per the Penguin edition), but gets in a grumble about "the decline or rather death of the cultivation of liberal letters" first.

When you ask what did the Middle Ages ever do for us, remember: in the 830s the monks of Fulda Abbey copied this recipe for an almost-lasagna, Patina Apiciana, from De re coquinaria by Apicius (a signature dish, if you will). Full recipe below!

I need to start posting on here more so here is my win for the day: I just found the origin of the technique I am studying for my thesis. The first pattern Gregory of Tours encountered that arguably introduced him to the concept and proved to him the power of mimicking the scriptures 🤯 #medievalsky

In today's episode of #chatgpt is amazing, did anyone else know that it is able to determine what handwriting might be. This is something i am pretty decent at but sometimes i just get caught on something...
