Sorry to hear of the passing of Manchan Magan a great writer and promoter of the Irish language also a link to the Republican history of the country being the grandson of Sheila Humphreys lifelong Republican and member of Cumann na mBan he was also the great grand nephew of the O Rahilly.
Born #Onthisday 1885 nurse Aoife de Búrca who treated the injured (including James Connolly) during the #EasterRising at the Hibernian Hotel & the GPO & carried messages through the chaos. She returned to nursing for #Dublin Corporation, dedicating her life to care.
Back in 2021 after some searching found the grave of May and Lil Conlon at Kilcrea Friary Cork. Lil's book "Cumann na mBan and the women of Ireland " is well worth reading. Great information on the War of Independence in the Cork area.
Brid Duggan sister of Peg , Annie and Sarah. Brid was a national school teacher near her home in Blackpool Cork. Unlike her three sisters she was a staunch supporter of De Valera she had a photo of him displayed prominently at her home on Cathedral Street.
The Douglas Hyde was where Fionbarras is now Leeann if memory serves me right Coughlans was where my grandfather used to go for a pint many many years ago.
Left to right Lil Conlon, Sarah Duggan, Kate Breen from Kerry is standing ( not properly visible) and May Conlon all republican. All except Kate Breen supported the treaty. Kate eventually became a Fianna Fail councillor. The Conlons lived in Shanakiel Cork.
Sarah Langford one of the Duggan sisters from Blackpool Cork a seamstress by trade worked from home had to endure numerous raids on the house by the Black and Tans a friend of Michael Collins she supported the treaty. She went through great difficulties to get a pension for her service.
My mother Sheila, born 1935 , began work in 1948 aged 13 married 1960 had to leave work over the law at the time , widowed 1986 passed away December 2021 . This photo was taken on her 84th birthday.
O'Brien's Mill Douglas ( Saint Patrick's Woolen Mills ). My grandmother worked there in the darning shed I still have her needles. My mother started work in the Mill at 13 years of age till she was 15 she never liked it she knew even back then in 1948 it wasn't right for children to work full time.
This lovely cat lives across from the Lough in Cork it spends its days watching the Ducks ,Geese and Swans they all hear it coning with the bell on its collar ringing when it runs.
