It was a weird situation because it was relatively secluded and wooded with a lot of switchbacks and I was a hundred percent just focused on the ground immediately ahead of me. But yeah, stopping and adding two minutes on my mile split was probably the move.

You can continue on at the same pace which is weird, try to speed up, which smacks of pride and also fucking sucks on a hill, or peel off and let the dog snuffle for a minute or so which absolutely kills your pace. Not to mention trying to haul the dog off and start again with zero momentum.

Early this morning, I was walking up a hill with a moderate pack, staring fixedly at the ground and cursing my life choices when I looked left and realized that I had overtaken and was pacing alongside a youngish woman who also looked at me in surprise. And at that point, what do you do?

It is strange sometimes to be a man of large size out in the world. Generally speaking, I will give a woman a wide berth when I am walking for my health. Both because I have an exuberant dog of little brain and also because I don’t want to appear creepy or threatening.

I do not have any traumatic experiences with cats save for one time when my mom’s boyfriend brought a cat into our house and it met a violent end from all the stray dogs we sheltered.

Which was a helluva thing to come home to with my little sister after football practice.

After I had my little misfortune that resulted in three new titanium vertebrae last year, I was unable to even lift a pan for several months. It was very disconcerting and led me to tell my physical therapist that I needed resistance bands at the house to do bicep curls and shoulder raises.

In any other country we would be on the third or fourth republic. I do not despair of the idea of a republic, but I think that we might be on the cusp of a fifth republic.

The first was 1787. The second was 1865 or thereabouts. The third I think began in either the new deal or passage of the civil rights act. Things get somewhat squishy.

I can tumble a dog and roughly grab its scruff or have it bite my arm and neither of us will be upset about it. That’s rare for cats.

There are so many dichotomies here. Introverts and extroverts. Independents and dependents. Dare I say, male and female, that inform preferences. I prefer an animal that I can walk with, who will return to me at a whistle and I can roughhouse with.
