No doubt this is an acute overtourism location, but don't think this was really the cause, nor will cancelling it have any effect. Seems more about appeasing a handful of locals who are looking for ways to express their exasperation.

Kept calling it 'Disneyfied' or "fake" but was convinced there is a very specific term for this and it was seriously bugging me. Finally figured out the word is 'simulacrum' and absolutely thought you should know.

But with regard to the 88 selection process, it's hard to know exactly what's going on. They are not fully transparent about the criteria and permissions, which is one of the criticism against it.

It's not precise to say "studio" unless the studio itself is a member of the production committee (it is investing its own money), or it has some other arrangement where it has control as a rights holder. Otherwise, the studio is just a contractor and probably doesn't have any power here.

Seems unlikely you will ever find one of these with a Kyoani work for which the studio is the primary rights holder, so anything from Chunibyo and forward. Allegedly, they want nothing to do with this or anything else connected to Kadokawa. Other than never getting Haruhi S3, I am ok with this (^ -)
