Yesterday we left our offices and @crawfordartgallery.bsky.social’s storied spaces behind as its ambitious, much-needed redevelopment gets going!

It’s a building that has inspired me for 25 years, held me in my first tentative steps as curator, and been the backdrop to the best parts of my career.

This day 12 years ago I was in the midst of installing my first exhibition as a curator. What a journey it’s been since then, now preparing for the future of @crawfordartgallery.bsky.social

My grandad, Dr John A. “Gus” Ryan, was born #onthisday in 1916.

This is his graduation photo, @ucc.ie Class of 1940. He went on to be Director of the Cork Blood Bank, persuading a suspicious public that giving blood was a good thing (!) and traveling far and wide to maintain stocks.

Hazel’s wistful expression, gentle brushing of the eponymous rose against her neck, and fingering of the carved sphinx armrest suggest the mysteries she holds within herself.

To me she is akin to Gretta Conroy in Joyce’s “The Dead” or perhaps Yeats’ ‘Red Rose, proud Rose, sad Rose of all my days…’

Hazel Lavery died #onthisday in 1935.

For her 90th anniversary, let’s take a look at one of her husband’s most celebrated portraits of her.

In his memoir, John Lavery lists this work under the title, The Red Rose – Hazel. Completed in 1923, it is one of more than 400 portraits he made of her.

As our #CrawfordUncovered tours enter their final days, it’s been deeply moving and encouraging to savour the experience with so many wonderful visitors. This evening it was the turn of the Friends of Crawford Art Gallery, stalwart supporters for nearly 40 years.

Yesterday I had the privilege to be guided around the hidden corners of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral on the 198th anniversary of its visionary architect William Burges.

Huge thanks to Orla O’Byrne for this remarkable insight into the Burges-designed maquette collection of international significance.

It has been incredibly fun and just a little moving to welcome people back to @crawfordartgallery.bsky.social this week for #CrawfordUncovered tours. Brilliantly orchestrated by the whole gallery team, the enthusiasm of visitors has been a salve before the redevelopment works commence ❤️‍🩹

Dr J. A. “Gus” Ryan died #onthisday in 1974, the day before President Erskine H. Childers.

He was Director of the Cork Blood Bank and my grandfather, although his early death meant I never got to meet him. He is still spoken of with such love and admiration.

The new bridge at Lambley’s Lane and Wandesford Quay / Crosse’s Green is a really great addition to the riverine landscape and urban mobility.

Now, that elusive Events Centre…

The insertion of new levels has made the whole space less accessible, and more of an obstacle, with visual noise from the excess of railings.

Don’t get me started on the treatment of sculpture.

The overall effect is bleak. This is no longer a park. It is a low-maintenance thoroughfare.
November 15, 2025 at 5:55 PM
The ‘heart’ of this space is, in a word, bleak. Gone is a significant portion of green space, replaced by an expanse of gravel. This can be a pleasant surface in urban parks but only when in a successful ratio to soft surfaces.

Additional seating and overall colouration are positives.
November 15, 2025 at 5:52 PM
There’s an excessive use of railings internally, occasioned by the introduction of new levels. There are at least three different finishes to these, which suggests incoherence rather than shifting zones.
