Statement by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on anniversary of October 7th attacks.
Today marks two years since the heinous terror attacks by Hamas against Israel.

My thoughts are with the hostages remaining in Gaza, who must be released immediately. I think also of all those who lost loved ones, including the family of Kim Damti.

This war needs to end. The appalling slaughter and famine in Gaza needs to end.

I’m deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Manchán Magan.

Manchán was a passionate advocate for our language and culture, whose work illuminated the richness of Ireland’s landscape, history and heritage.

I utterly condemn the appalling attack that left two dead, and others seriously injured outside a synagogue in Manchester, on the holy day of Yom Kippur.

There must be zero tolerance for hatred or violence in any form.

I’m receiving briefings on the interception of the Gaza flotilla.

Our ambassador is in touch with Israeli authorities and consular assistance will be provided.

This was a humanitarian mission - it underlines the imperative of getting aid into Gaza as quickly as possible.

Magnificent achievement by #TeamEurope to win the Ryder Cup again.

Courage, skill and an inspirational putt by Shane Lowry proved enough despite a late surge by USA at a raucous Bethpage.

Congratulations! 🇪🇺🇮🇪🏆

I welcome that the Irish and British Governments have today published a joint framework on addressing the legacy of the Troubles.
Statement by Taoiseach Micheál Martin on the agreement of a Joint Framework on addressing legacy of the past

I welcome that the Irish and British Governments have today published a joint framework on addressing the legacy of the Troubles. The aim of this package of measures is to provide mechanisms for truth, accountability and justice for victims and survivors of the Troubles, and their families. In all my engagements with Prime Minister Starmer to date, and before that Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Hilary Benn, we have agreed on the importance of finding a way forward together on this most fundamental, yet unresolved, issue. Today marks the start of a new framework of partnership, which recognises the enormity and enduring pain of the legacy of the violence of the Troubles for so many, and our essential responsibility to address that legacy as we work towards truer reconciliation.

I strongly welcome the Commission’s decision today to propose suspension of parts of the EU’s Association Agreement with Israel.

Ireland has long called for this action.

Outstanding performance by Ireland, coming agonisingly close to what would have been a great victory over France.

I am very sorry to learn of the death of my friend, fellow party member and councillor Patrick Gerard Murphy. He was a natural public representative who cared deeply and passionately about his place and the people he represented. My deepest sympathies to his family and community.

I had a very warm and constructive meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers this morning.
I had a very warm and constructive meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers this morning.

We discussed a broad range of matters, including the positive relations between our two countries and the extensive programme of bilateral cooperation underway between our two Governments, including in preparation for the upcoming UK-Ireland Summit, which will take place in Ireland in the spring.

Very good progress has been made on legacy, and the Prime Minister and I agreed that we are close to setting out a framework to address legacy issues, recognising its importance to victims and survivors, and to the wider community in Northern Ireland and across these islands.

We discussed the catastrophic situation in Gaza - the need for a ceasefire, release of all hostages and a massive surge in humanitarian aid. We also committed to continue to work together with the Coalition of the Willing to strengthen support for Ukraine and on increasing pressure on Russia to stop its war of aggression on the people of Ukraine.
