And water tower. That’s how it was where I lived in Germany. Each plaza had a little market.

Good urbanism has so many benefits, but it requires a mix of commitment to the project, time, grace towards change, and long-term perspective. History is critical to building that understanding.

By understanding when, how, and why indigenous Americans congregated in the past we can understand some colonial American urban patterns. It’s also just a good exercise in not removing indigenous history and existence from how we understand North American human geography.

It’s also worth looking into North American indigenous history and understanding where and why people congregated in certain places. North American history is far less “urban” than European or Asian, but urban centers did exist. And so did spaces that mirrors them.

I think there’s also a degree to which planners and people generally thought the car would eliminate these constraints. But the reality is they still exist. Perhaps on a bigger scale than the streetcar era. Part of US urbanism is that we simply put all our eggs in the auto-basket for a period.

People will take transit on holidays, we just don’t adjust service wisely. Don’t Sunday service on holidays, run holiday service. More mid-morning and early-afternoon service and more mid-to-late evening service. Like, we all know when people go to dinner and come home. It’s not rocket science.

#PlowTheSidewalks would pilot sidewalk snow plowing in Chicago and fix a century old burden unnecessarily placed on residents, and correct and unjust system that harms hundreds of thousands of residents. The pilot was killed over fake fears. Let’s remember who did this:

Sidewalks will be cleared in a patchwork manner. Chicago places the burden of sidewalk snow clearance on adjacent property owners despite the fact it’s publicly owned, and despite the fact the city clears streets. Not even two months ago a minority of alders killed a pilot that would remedy this.

In fact, you can learn more by checking out the Transportation 101 guide I wrote for @climatecabinet.org. It lays out policy ideas for zero-carbon transportation, much of which doesn’t need federal oversight. climatecabineteducation.org/transportati...

Really speaks to how clean and quiet transit can be that this operates basically in an open format office.
