Thanks so much, Lisa! That makes me so happy! I loved ending the book with ‘Cemetery Sisters’, a happier story of hope & redemption than some of my others.

Absolutely loving the ‘Ink and Magic’ writing retreat I’m attending in Maryland led by Leslye Penelope, Cerece Rennie Murphy & Ines Johnson. Their collective knowledge as successful authors & close friends is phenomenal. Our creativity has been sparked in this nourishing space!

So loved interviewing artist & illustrator Authan Chen. He created the amazing cover for my short story collection-Doll Seed. We give tips about what writers should know re: the cover design process when working with a press. @sistahscifi.bsky.social

Celebrating a win—a finished, readable draft of a writing craft book that I’ve been working off and on since 2022. I promised myself I’d finish it in June. Working with a writing buddy, for accountability, since April helped. As a creative person it’s important to keep promises to yourself.

Settling into my first solo writing retreat at a local hotel. Playing solitaire to ease in as Maya Angelou used to do on her retreats. A candle and a few room sprays to make it cozy. What do you bring when you go on a retreat? #writers

This book hit all of my sweet spots:
-Set in the 1920s in Washington DC
-features many historic Black intellectuals and writers
-a creative envisioning of the spirit world
-immersive story telling
-Great female friendships and strong heroine

Woot woot! I’m looking forward to digging into the core questions that the Shadows and Light conference poses: What is the relationship between Black #Horror and Black Healing? What are the stakes for readers and writers?

#FridayReads Just started the story collection Doll Seed by @micheletracyberger.bsky.social, which I bought after hearing the author on @ouropinions.bsky.social! 💙📚🪐
A paperback book, Doll Seed by Michele Tracy Berger. The cover illustration shows a black baby doll being broken apart by white dolls wielding forks and umbrellas as weapons. One side of the cover has swirly pastel shapes, and the whole vibe is an uncomfortable combination of playful and horrifying.

Absolutely thrilled to be panelist at this conference which will explore the relationship between Black Horror and Black Healing! A rich convo for writers & readers. Come join us at the San Francisco Public Library!

Still buzzing from Claire Dederer’s stellar talk “Monsters Among Us” at the Cleveland Museum of Art w/the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities. We puzzled together over ‘What do we do with great art made by bad people?’ Short answer: see the art & add a lot of context
