I never do stuff like this but what the heck ... it's the start of a new era in public media ..

In a functional democracy media can ask elected representatives questions about their decisions and they not only answer them, they understand they are expected to . I've observed that people from most fields who know what they're talking about appreciate real questions.

Politics is how government happens . Like it or not . That IS reality

One thing Trombone Shorty said to me on this reporting trip that will stay with me is that people in NOLA will find a way to find joy even in sadness. This hip hop theatre event by local playwright Anthony Bean, being performed Saturday, is a testament to that

New Orleans remembers Katrina through theater and Hip hop
As the city remembers the events of 20 years ago, memories are being preserved and history is being honored through art, storytelling and Hip hop.

We're wrapping up our week of reporting in New Orleans with more Katrina stories to tell. This morning we'll tell you about a man who left NOLA because of the disaster and never went back as well as stories of some who went back right away and say they'll never leave again . Hope you'll tune in

It may sound strange but it's true : sometimes when you're immersed in one story--as we are here in NOLA reporting on the 20th anniversary of Katrina--you honestly don't hear about another for a time, so the horrible news of the school shooting in MN was slow to reach us. We're getting up to speed

Wherever I go I try to find the historical markers . They tell you a lot, not just about events of the past but who is empowered to claim the story and the space in the present.

Ten years ago I came to NOLA as part of our series of local conversations about national issues; we focused on the huge changes to schools after Hurricane Katrina . It's great to be back; this time with @npr.org's Morning Edition and we're talking memories, rebuilding & resilience (& schools...)
