Democracy demands better from its government and leaders to serve (all) the people

Functional democracy: "The votes swing the country to the needs of the people"
Disfunctional: "Use everything to swing the people to our need"

well said indeed. Answering with some glitzy whataboutisms, refusing to answer, or deliberate obfuscations (smoke and mirrors through counterattacks) in this context is deeply unprofessional and an embarrassment to your country.

That does not necessarily mean they picked a side in the conflict other than the side of people suffering.

Don't auto-frame it like that all 250.000 are sitting in camp A or camp B.

There are other options. It's polarized in the media 24/7 but a lot of people just want the suffering to end.
