You've missed his point. He is, very pointedly, attacking a fundamental American idea in favor of socialism. No matter what one believes, this is solid gold for the MAGA political machine and awful for the vast majority of Democratic candidates who run from the middle. He works for NYC alone.

Many, but people chose to work in education. There is no government policy mandating it. If anything, with the rapid expansion of charter schools, education is increasingly market driven. Even now one can opt out of teachers unions and be a teacher.

Individuals did. Sometimes each person makes a choice to work with others. But it is always an act of self actualization informed by free will. If it is the policy of the state to enforce a collective then that is tyranny. Submission to that edict is innately anti American.
