This welcome and long overdue 'showy' (and un-ringed) individual becomes the 10th WTE to have been recorded in/over the #LDV (with 7 of the 10 records relating to satellite-tagged reintroduction birds from the Isle of Wight - often returning back south after a post-juvenile wander) 🦅
It’s been a real purple patch for the #LDV over the last few days, with the highlight being a juvenile White-tailed Eagle + a male Hen Harrier, drake Smew, Glossy Ibis, two Scaup, two Caspian Gulls, two Tundra Bean Geese & up to 19 White-fronted Geese @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Great to see this weeks Glossy Ibis making use of the new reedbed scrapes at Bank Island (created in May with our partners Britcon Limited) - build it and they will come 😃 - great job everyone! This is the 7th record for the reserve, with all bar one coming since 2022 @yorkbirding.bsky.social

It's useful to see and understand how the Woodcock are using the wider area beyond the designated and protected sites - always more to discover/learn 🐦 Huge thanks to our team for all the hours spent after dark building up this valuable data set 🔦
We’ve just downloaded some more data from our recently GPS-tagged Woodcock, with this mapped individual spending time feeding in just a couple of fields near #SkipwithCommon during the night and roosting up on the NNR during the day @yorkbirding.bsky.social

We simply couldn’t achieve a fraction of what we do in the #LDV without our dedicated team of volunteers, so it was fantastic for everyone to get together last week for an end of year farewell before a well-earned break – very grateful to have such an incredible group of people on board #TeamLDV

Time was also spent tackling more scrub regeneration on #SkipwithCommon NNR last week to maintain open areas of heath, along with finishing the planting of the last of the hedging plants around NDC and the new building to thicken the existing roadside hedge 🌿🌳

Last week our team managed to fit in another two days working at #ForgeValleyWoods NNR – dealing with dangerous trees along the roadside and riverbank, as well as coppicing more hazel to increase the light reaching the woodland floor and river – many thanks as always to our fantastic team 👏

The highlight in the #LDV at the weekend was a Spotted Redshank at Bubwith Bridge (& still present this week) – this species was once a regular winter visitor in the large flocks of Redshank, but is now much scarcer outside of passage periods @yorkbirding.bsky.social
Can visitors to the #LDV please note that water levels remain incredibly high across the site creating limited access to the reserve (although an amazing watery landscape).

Whilst we’d like to wish our visitors, volunteers, partners & supporters a happy and bird-filled Christmas 🎄, at present, the site is best enjoyed at North Duffield Carrs (minus the second hide 🤿), Thorganby viewing platform, Bubwith Bridge & Ellerton/Aughton Churchyards 🐦🦆🦢

Last week we also welcomed another @naturalengland.bsky.social YorksNLincs team to the #LDV – this time helping us with the clearance of small regenerating Silver Birch scrub and Scots Pine on #SkipwithCommon NNR, to help maintain the open heath areas on the Common. Many thanks to all involved 👏

Great to welcome back staff from Nestle to the #LDV last week, helping with 'gapping up' the hedgerows around the car park/paths/viewing platform at North Duffield Carrs - to benefit the winter thrushes and finches present in the area. Great team effort – many thanks to all 👏

The only project in Sweden currently utilising this method for Jacks is here at Ottenby Bird Observatory, with super interesting and rewarding data just in the last two Autumns with 40 tagged this year. Still much to learn about this species!

I've just called on the UK Government to stop Berwick Bank!

The world's deadliest wind farm for birds shouldn't be funded by public money.

Whilst we are hoping our released Corncrakes are now in their wintering areas, and we await next spring with bated breath, there is still a lot of work to be done in the #LDV (planning next year’s releases/carrying out site management/maintaining the vegetation in the pens) 🌿🐦

We’ve also been up to #DuncombePark NNR recently to look at forthcoming management works and wider #NatureRecovery plans - as well as the incredible veteran trees and stunning fungi, the site was buzzing with small birds inc. good numbers of Treecreepers and Nuthatches 🐦
