but if one person has an open palm, and another other a clenched fist? the open palm shows there's a way to do this with minimal bloodshed, but the fist shows that should that route not be taken, there WILL be a fight.

showing only a clenched fist will scare them, yes, but it will also empower the reigime as public sentiment turns against those of the clenched fist. showing only an open palm will get you nowhere, as you can be easily ignored.

i understand my comment there was a little glib, and nonviolent protest is an incredibly corageous thing to do, but again, as i've previously stated, nonviolent protest gets nowhere unless there are other protests that are violent.
