Text that reads: Futaba never really meant to overhear Akechi and Akira's conversation. She was just checking on them! In case Akechi went to try anything (for the third time! Valid concern!). She forgot how Akechi tends to just start trauma dumping without any real transition. So it went from harmless eavesdropping to… less harmless eavesdropping pretty quickly. But like, they totally know that she has Leblanc and Akira's phone thoroughly bugged. At least Akira does. He should know better, really. "I don't remember what my mother looked like." Akechi's voice came through Futaba's headphones. There was a pause. Maybe Akira made a comforting gesture? Or something? A hand on his knee, a nod to continue? "It was a decade ago, that she died. And possessions of any kind, including photos, don't last long in orphanages and foster homes. She used to say I had her eyes, but… I don't remember much else." Some shuffling. Akira and his nonverbal comfort… At this point, Futaba realized exactly what she was listening into, and pulled her headphones off. It's easy and it's hard for her to understand Akechi; she lost her mother too,but that makes him even harder for her to wrap her head around. How could he do what he did if he knew how bad it felt? She wished it was easy. That she could just blame Shido for everything and treat Akechi like an innocent victim. But he pulled the trigger, and that's something he can't take back or ever make up for.

there's a lot you can say about how awful the environment in shujin was for akira but like. one of his teachers all but outright saying he doesn't belong is particularly egregious. he may as well have called him out by name

Goro knew he was pretty. Like his mother. It was an asset, one he knew how to use– a charming smile to capture only positive attention of the cameras that used to haunt him, an easy-going laugh enough to get people to let their guard down, forget that he was smarter and more desperate than they were. He didn’t see any of that in the mirror now, his vision was too blurry without his contacts, enabling the worst corners of his brain to fill in the gaps with all the imperfections he could normally hide with enough makeup, but never remove completely; the splatter of freckles that centered on his nose, only growing more visible as Spring steadily transitioned into Summer, the purplish eyebags that never went away no matter how much rest he got, only seeming to grow deeper and darker at moments like these.

this conversation drives me insane for so many reasons. but the fact that akira not only pays enough attention to akechi's media presence to be aware that he's pretending to have a sweet tooth AND is invested enough to be disappointed that it's fake. is definitely one of the more prominent ones.

text that reads: Akira’s return home had been unsettlingly normal. It took less than a week for him to fall back into the same routine he’d had with his parents before his arrest. The surrealness of his time in the metaverse all but disappeared, and he felt himself reassimilating into what he was expected to be. He hated it. He wasn’t expecting any kind of grand apology from his parents after his charges had been dropped. No, they just pretended it never happened. That they hadn’t all but abandoned him for a year, practically disowned him for doing the right thing. Everything was exactly how he left it. The only indication that any time had passed at all was a thin layer of dust over everything in his room. He was used to being somewhat ignored by his parents, part of him even preferred it, so he wasn’t surprised. At least he had Morgana. His parents weren’t pleased about the new housemate at first– he’s forever thankful to Sojiro for taking the brunt of their complaints before they passively accepted his presence, like they seemed to with everything that bothered them.

this particular conversation between sae and akechi has always struck me as interesting. because i don’t think akechi has any reason to pretend to be annoyed by her accusation? so even though he’s rarely honest with sae i doubt he’s faking that. his reasoning is questionable at best- 1/4

text that reads: Evelyn walked through the rain, umbrella gripped tightly in her hands. It was a cold night, the wind cutting through her sweater and straight through her. If it weren’t for the sound of rain pelting her umbrella, she swore she’d be able to hear the sound of ice cracking on her bones as she moved. She liked the chill. She liked the feeling of something stiff being broken again and again as she powered through a storm. She would crack as much ice as she needed to if it meant she was better than them. text that reads: She didn’t bother to turn on the heat in her apartment. She liked the feelings of running her hands across the goosebumps of her arms. She liked being textured, covered in bumps and ridges, proof that her body is real. She turned the water on the shower all the way to hot, the bathroom slowly filling with steam. She liked the burn, the harsh contrast. It made her feel alive. It was almost enough to make her melt, to pause and take a breath, to relax herself in the belief that her apartment is empty and safe. She does not.
