Cinnamon-vanilla candied almonds! So delicious around the winter holidays! And they're easy enough to make that I can whip up a batch with no problems!

More of a process than a recipe. If you put in too much sugar, you'll end up with spiced sugar left over in the pan for coffee or other uses!

People have been asking about the cute ring I've been wearing lately. It's sterling silver with an oval bezel setting holding what I think is a green tourmaline. I can't imagine it's an emerald. A fan sent it to me back on March 13th. There's a story behind that....
Midori Niji shows off the ring that a fan sent her. Earlier that day.... The intercom in Midori's Manhattan condo buzzed, and Midori answered, "Yes?" The voice from the intercom replied, "Delivery for you, Ms. Niji. Do you want the delivery person to run it up to you, or do you want me to sign for it? Signature required." "Oh, send them up, George. Thanks!" Moments later, a knock came at Midori's door. Looking through the peephole, Midori saw the top of a brown baseball cap with letters emblazoned on it. Midori read it as "UPS," but she felt that her eyes kept slipping off of the logo and she would have sworn there were more letters. She opened the door to see a very short delivery person of indeterminate gender wearing a brown uniform. They had wild hair of various shades of pink with eyes to match. They looked up at Midori with a mischievous grin. "Delivery for Midori Niji. I just need a signature." They offered an envelope, a small parcel the size of a ring box, and a handheld device with a line for Midori's signature. Midori took the envelope and package, then signed her name with her fingertip. The delivery person held out a hand. Midori looked into the delivery person's eyes and thought that a tip was the most normal and appropriate thing in the world to offer at that moment. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a $20 bill ("Wait," Midori thought to herself, "why am I carrying cash in my pocket?"), and handed it over. The delivery person accepted the tip, bowed, and left. Midori felt slightly dizzy as she closed the door, but she opened the envelope to read the letter. "Yo, what the hell? 'Cuddle Puddle'? EW! Is this an invitation to an orgy?" She opened the parcel to find a box containing a silver ring with a green gem. "Oh, this is cute, though!" She put the ring on her pinky to admire it. Part 2 As Midori sat down in the main dining room with her little sister Pinku to share a snack, the younger girl gasped. "Midori, that ring! Where did you get that?" "Oh, this?" Midori lifted her left hand to show off her new bauble. On her right hand, she wore the delicate sterling silver ring with a rounded green cabochon set into a bezel that was delivered to her earlier that day. The stone (a green tourmaline, and certainly not an emerald, Midori thought) caught the light and sparkled more than a semiprecious gem with that cut had any right to. "A fan delivered it to me earlier. Accompanied by a kind of a creepy letter, but no return address, so I'm keeping it! Isn't it cute!?" "Big sister," Pinku replied, "that whole ring is enveloped by energy, the likes of which I've never seen!" Midori stated flatly, "Energy." She raised an eyebrow. "Yes, energy!" Her sister's reply clearly offended the pink-haired girl. "Don't mock me! You know I can see auras and energy and stuff!" "Well," Midori started dubiously, "I know you like the...uh...new-age stuff and crystals and all, but you know none of that's real, right?" "No," Pinku protested, "it's all real! I've seen it myself! You are wearing a genuine magic item. Right. Now. And it's powerful, too!" Midori failed to stifle a chuckle. "COME ON," the younger sister retorted, "just because you can't sense it doesn't mean it's not real! What...what did the letter say?" "Oh, yeah!" Midori shifted to pull the folded letter out of her back pocket. She had stopped reading when she got to the words "cuddle puddle." She handed the letter over. "Weird shit. Said the ring would take me to Golarion. Isn't that the new nightclub in Midtown that has all the weird shit?" Pinku looked up from the letter and raised her pink eyebrows. "Big sis, I'm sixteen! What do I know about nightclubs?" She returned to her reading. "Um, or 'cuddle puddles'? Is that some adult slang for something to do with sex?" Part 3 ...Midori spoke: "ALAKAZAM!" Pinku flinched, and her older sister laughed in response. "You should have seen your face!" Pinku glowered. "Not funny!" "Ha ha! But the actual word was strange, like from another language." She held aloft the ring. "'Pack-ski!'" "That's not how you say that word," Pinku blurted out. She immediately slapped a hand over her own mouth. Midori looked at her mischievously. "Ohh, so you know!" "I won't tell!" Pinku crossed her arms. At that moment, Orenji, the third youngest of all the siblings, walked into the room from the kitchen, dragging a heavy whiff of incense in with her. She wore an orange T-shirt to harmonize with her ginger hair and carried three individually wrapped Hostess Cupcakes, a bag of Golden Sriracha Doritos, and a bottle of Diet Dr. Pepper. She placed her snacks on the table, looked at the interchange between her sisters, and blinked slowly. "'Pass-key!" Midori shouted. "No!" Pinku shot back. "'Patch-ski'" She tried again. "Nuh-uh!" "'Tchotchke!'" "STAAAAAAAAHP!" Orenji interrupted, "What...what is this? Are you playing a game?" Pinku yelled, "DON'T HELP MIDORI!" Midori turned to Orenji. "See, Pinku seems to think that this..." she held the ring up for her sister to see, "...is a magic ring, and that if I say the magic word," she made a gesture with her hands next to her head to pantomime an explosion, "I'll POOF AWAY to some other place." Orenji shot Pinku a concerned look. "Did you take those herbal supplements in the jar on my nightstand? Please tell me you didn't...." "Damn it, Jiji,” Pinku retorted, “I know what I know! The ring is definitely magical! And the letter says to use the magic words to activate it!" She shoved the letter into Orenji's face. After reading for a moment, the ginger-haired sister stated, "The word is 'pączki.' It means those heavy Polish jelly doughnuts." Pinku grabbed Midori. "DON'T SAY IT, MIDORI!"
