Frederick embarked on a range of merchant ventures, but he first began his journey making #Marmite in 1902 on Mincing Lane, London.

Marmite slowly grew in popularity, boosted by the discovery of vitamins in 1912, and it was being advertised as a meat extracts supplement.

Frederick Wissler, was born in Switzlerand in 1855, to parents Samuel and Elizabeth Wissler. He immigrated to England prior to 1880 when he married London born Alice Maud Mary McLeog, who together had four children. #WorldMarmiteDay

Love it or hate it...

While most of us are familiar with Marmite's distinctive taste & iconic black and yellow jars, the migration story of how this quintessentially British spread came to be (and it's role in WW1) is not so commonly known.

Stepping up: The role of education in responding to the riots
In the wake of the riots, our learning team, along with two classroom teachers, reflect on the importance of teaching migration to counter dangerous and divisive narratives.

And as we reflect on last year's violent riots and start to process more recent anti-immigrant protests, fuelled by harmful stereotypes and misinformation, we return to a blog we shared in the summer of 2024 which explored the role of education in responding to the riots at the time.

These events are a reminder that there is so much work to be done to bridge divides and contribute to a society that feels more connected to each other.

As an organisation that explores how the movement of people to and from the UK across the ages has shaped who we are as individuals, communities, and as nations, we are deeply committed to standing up against division and hatred.
migrationmuseum.org
A year on from the violence directed towards people seeking sanctuary, people of colour, Muslims and others across the UK, we continue to see organised anti-immigrant protests — most recently last weekend in Epping, Essex.

"I stand here before you today not as an immigrant success story, but as a British success story. I am what is possible when Britain is true to its real spirit.' – George Alagiah OBE (1955-2023).

George was a remarkable supporter and trustee. He spoke these words at the launch of our first venue.
