I’m often asked which character I love to draw but the thing is
drawing 100 images of a character and drawing 20 5-panel pages of that character are two totally different things. One’s like thanksgiving dinner, the other’s like dessert for breakfast

I’ve been doing these ballpoint pen commissions at conventions on 11x17 and have been enjoying doing them a lot more.
I’ve also been charging for all signatures at shows, unless they’re personalized in which case they’re always free, and was pleasantly surprised by so many personalization requests.

Did this headsketch in my sketchbook on the plane, which led me to do this more finished piece as a commission. What is it that’s so freeing about doodling in a sketchbook that tightens and stiffens up when you do it for money

I’m hard to shop for because I buy everything I want for myself and most of it is art and no one really knows what I want except me like who knew that this would be the highlight of my 2024 acquisitions

A sketch I did on the plane. This is a microcosm of what I think is wrong with much of my artwork. I focus so much on making things look competent that I forget to make it interesting. It’s supposed to be the Hulk but man it’s a boring ass Hulk. The Adjectiveless Hulk

I was thumbing through my first X-men issue that someone brought me and I had douchechills because I don’t know if I was stepping on toes only a couple years into my career but Bobby turning into iceman wasn’t in the script, I just drew it. I thought I was such hot shit and that I knew everything.

Speaking of original art on my walls @jacobchabot.bsky.social is on here. I don’t know if this is a compliment or if it’s actually an insult but it’s meant to be a compliment but I often think that the fact that he’s not a world famous billionaire means I don’t know how the world works.

Oh here is a commission I got using my IBM savings from the amazing Eduardo Risso when I was still a top cow intern in 03-04, where I asked for all the OG Minutemen. It was pricey because it was per character. But when I received it, two of the Minutemen hadn’t even been revealed yet in the book.

My favorite collection is still my wall of post-it notes.
I like nice things like everyone but like everyone I have to justify spending money on everything. I do the same for art obviously but holy crap, you have no idea how much, “I just really like it,” factors into the equation.

I have so many pieces like this. Things I bought because I loved it, and turns out they became valuable or the artist became popular. Like this pastel that I liked because there was something about it. Done by someone named James Jean.

Sometimes I’m like, I make a decent living as a comic artist. But I’ve never in my life flown first or business class and I really want to. I drive an old minivan than I bought with gum in the carpet. I don’t live extravagantly at all
But then I look at my art collection and I’m like ooh yeah lolol

Okay okay okay they both suck but honestly between a marketing campaign that takes irresponsibly bold artistic and budgetary moves vs one that rehashes old concepts using creatively bankrupt methodologies ideally suited to rehashing old concepts I know which one I at least respect more
