I can only guess that the amount they spend on ads FOR their site is just less than the amount they receive for having ads ON their site. Same circular logic as those mobile games that are full of ads for other mobile games that are full of ads for....

Out of sheer curiosity I recently clicked on one that was like "Divers found a train under the sea. What was inside shocked them". And it was weird, poorly-written fiction? Like not even in the style of a news story. I'm so confused about how THIS is what pays the bills for media companies now
