He’s one of those rare birds, a publisher who became a successful writer. Something else I really enjoyed is Vine Street by Dominic Nolan. Set in Soho pre, during and post-war with a satisfyingly grumpy and misanthropic cop. Lots of tarts, bent coppers, bookies’ runners - and killers. Worth a read.
