You got this! Stay on top of the numbers. The eyes are uber sensitive. Our 1st sugar dog was diagnosed at age 4 and lived to 14. Because of her, I got certified as a Pet Diabetes Educator. We adopted 4 more diabetic surrenders in the past 9 yrs. The Goldens have artificial lenses. Pic attached.

How old is your dog? There are many ways to cut costs. CGMs are great for initial dose shakedown, but I've used a meter with my diabetic canines for 20 years with great success.

Glad your guy made through his chemo Ak-Rita. Is that what caused his diabetes? Prednisone is a common trigger.

Truth be told Rita, we've had four diabetic surrenders at one time. Pic of garden raiders attached.
Funny you mention the testing issue. Our smallest guy (a 19lb ShihTzu mix) was ferocious with testing at first. We had to find a spot on his butt, FAR away from his teeth, in order to test. 8-)

They experimented on dogs that were surgically altered to make them diabetic & treated them using insulin harvested from pigs.
Lots of dogs died during the research, but it got them to where they could try insulin on humans.
Today's diabetic dogs wear human Libre patches to track glucose levels!

Good on you for home BG testing. Many vets say it's not needed, but the American Animal Hospital Association says it is.

Be sure and check the Libre's "low" alarms against an actual meter. The Libre devices are great but they tend to read lower than actual BG when the dogs get below 100.

You gave her the gift of sight. That's awesome.

There are more affordable insulins that work well for canines. For example, Novolin N from Walmart is $24.88 in US Walmarts. It requires U100 syringes however.
