My wife's mother is "Mum" because British and my mother is "Mom" because American and we do call them that when talking to each other and to them. We have to specify "my dad" or "your dad" when talking to each other, but we call them Dad when talking to them.

I don't understand why everyone rags on dumpster fires. They're almost the best case scenario - nice and contained and fairly easy to deal with.
House fires, chemical factory fires, wildfires - those are much more equivalent to the *gestures wildly* going on.

Short version is used to mean that family ties are stronger than met friends, the full original version means the family we choose is more important than the one we're born to.

I think "blood is thicker than water" is probably the worst offender since the original phrase means the exact opposite of how the condensed version is used.
