be mindful of what you choose to believe & why, and the impact of that choice on your happiness & the well-being of others
Pinned
We need to carefully think about what we believe about life and why we believe it. Then make deliberate choices about which beliefs to maintain, being mindful of how those choices will affect the world we all share. And continually reassess our beliefs in the light of growing experience.

We believe in diversity, multiculturalism, equity, & pluralistic secular democracy based on a universal human right to live as one chooses. We believe in peacemaking & welcoming foreigners. We believe in science & progress, protecting our planet, and in humility+goodwill. So we're moving to Canada.

Last month @charalba.bsky.social & I went to northern Michigan for the 1st time & fell in love with the clear blue saltless seas & charming lake towns. While there I cared for very sick folks in the hospital too, and we used half our vacation money to help #gaza and #sudan. Our hearts are with them.

A marvelous week w/ @charalba.bsky.social in one of my favorite places. Far too many incredible views to share. This one was in a 2-mile stretch of trail where we watched a mama grizzly & her 2 cubs frolic among the wildflowers for 20min, & see mountain goat kids & bighorn sheep up close. #glaciernp

Rarely top tier airlines allow military retirees to preboard, but usually it's restricted to active duty. Today was the 1st time someone enforced that on me. To me it's proof of posturing rather than gratitude, when a kid is thanked on the way to basic, but decades of service to country don't count.

This is a surprisingly nuanced exploration of DEI in America. It's long, but offers plenty to think about. Diversity, inclusion and equity are essential. The methods used to achieve them matter if we are to avoid creating new problems.
The rise and fall of DEI
DEI promised to remake academia and the American workforce. And then it collapsed, seemingly overnight. What went wrong?

The Mormon church's newspaper based in Utah boasts that the "Washington, D.C., bureau of the Deseret News reflects the publication’s dedication to delivering unimpeachable journalism." It employs TWO reporters in this "bureau", both just out of college and neither with a journalism degree. It shows.

The rainbow is a reminder that every shade on the entire spectrum of reality is essential. If you prefer one color for your own life, that's terrific. Someone else will prefer another. And that's the point. No color on the spectrum is superior. Every shade and every soul is equal and needed. #pride

Interestingly, liquid sugar raises diabetes risk but not sugar in solid food. And juice raises it much less than sugary soda. Fructose & glucose have different metabolic effects, so pasta doesn't harm like soda does. I've long said step 1 in a healthy diet is avoiding liquid sugar; science agrees!
Worried about sugar? Soda, sweet drinks carry more risk than foods
Sugary beverages are a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, per study that shows table sugar doesn't carry same risk
