Re: Job Interview (The Earth is Burning) L. Austin The earth is burning and I am on my way to an interview. I cannot afford a car. The bus will be here in seventeen minutes. I wonder if the man interviewing me will wince when he sees my skirt. My state places bounties on those who look like me. On the bus I scroll through cries of despair, crisis hotlines, proclamations of the end times. The earth is burning and I am sitting in a dental insurance office. I will graduate in a month with a music degree and little else. The men who interview me are polite. The interview lasts about seven minutes. They will let me know. The earth is burning and the bus will be here in thirty-two minutes. I sit and scroll through think pieces, statistics, forecasts of demise. My father texts me. He tells me not to worry. Maybe my degree will get me a job at Chipotle. The earth is burning. Ode to A Text From My Mother I am notified with a loving blade through my throat as I see the fledgling of a message atop my phone screen. She insists that I can tell her anything and my bed becomes scorching sand, exfoliating my back raw, vulnerable. The blade drops into my intestines and I will always be their son. Serrated knife gently caresses me, a newborn tadpole wrapped up too tight to grow its limbs. But I am always loved, as the praying mantis is when she ingests her lover because she has no choice but to survive. One day I will open myself like a diary never meant to be read, because I will have no choice but to live. Planet by L.
