I wrote a book! And I promise you'll love it 🤩
Here's what Philip Pullman says about it: 'This book is lovely - Miranda's observations are as sharp as ever, and in a strange way they seem to sharpen my own.'

A photo of the book in hardcover against a wooden background. The cover is a very light peach colour and has illustrations by Adam Beer of: a café in orange, a seagull and a girl with a kite in blue, a green pigeon, pink cow parsley and plastic bags and a yellow origami boat and leaves. The title is The place I’m in ‘WHAT I SEE WHEN I STOP TO NOTICE’ in black letters. It has this quote at the bottom ‘This Book is lovely’ by Philip Pullman.

A photo of a double-page spread of chapter heading ‘ON THE STREET’. The colour of the pages is blue, and the book is against a pink background. There are observations by me (the black text is too small for most people to read) and black-and-white illustrations by Adam Beer of: umbrellas in the rain, a puddle, the top of a double-decker bus, the side of a building and peoples’ legs and feet waiting in a bus queue. A photo of a double-page spread from the chapter ‘IN A CAFÉ’. The colour of the left-hand pages is white, and the colour of the right-hand page is peach, and the book is against a pale-pink background. There are observations by me (the black text is too small for most people to read) and a black-and-white illustration on the left-hand page by Adam Beer, of two women talking in a café. A photo of a double-page spread from the chapter 'AT THE PARK'. The colour of the pages is pink and the text is black and illustrations are in black and white. There are observations by me (the text is too small for most people to read I this image) and a black-and-white illustration on the left-hand page by Adam Beer, of a park with runners and trees, a close-up of a bush and a bee near a lavender flower. The right hand page has illustrations of a couple walking in a park from behind, a dachshund on a lead and a woman on a bicycle - facing away from us.

For many years I have been posting little observations online. What you may not know is that for many years, artists have been illustrating them - for no reason other than they wanted to respond. Below is a thread of some of these beautiful drawings because they should be seen 🧵

The face of an old black and white dog appears in the foam of a coffee handed to a woman beside me in a café, and then she takes a sip and it is gone.

As her date heads into the pizza restaurant they are eating outside of, a woman whips a tube of face cream out of her pocket and quickly applies it.

Man looking at a menu outside a pub: Macaroni and chips! Macaroni and chips! Macaroni and chips!
Woman: What's wrong with that?
Man: Nothing. I love macaroni and chips.

Little girl following her dad out of the house (as he empties a small recycling bin into the bigger one): What you doing daddy?
Her dad: Me? Taking out the recycling.
Little girl: The sound is good. I like it.

On the train home I notice a tense second between a man’s iPad falling from his hands, and his catching it neatly between his knees with an ‘Ah!’ of surprise.

Man outside Walthamstow Station: Hiya.
Woman: Oh hello! I didn’t recognise you with your hair short.
Man: Oh yes. I get it cut off once a year.
Woman: For winter.
Man (laughing): Yes. Just in time to get bloody cold.

A woman on the train in a red hijab and leopard-print shoes fans her teenage daughter with a red and gold fan. Her daughter wears an outfit decorated with green and bronze sequins. The two women are absolutely gorgeous together.

A woman feels avocados outside a fruit and veg shop. Her braids hug her head and then stand straight out at her neck like rays of sun.

Teenage boy in East London: I don't want to go to the party.
Teenage girl: I want you there.
Teenage boy: But I'm so awkward.
Teenage girl: So am I. I love you awkward.
Teenage boy: Thanks mate. You too.

A woman on a train wraps a book about birds in some bird-patterned wrapping paper. She opens a bird-themed card and writes a message.
Her husband: Well Irene, let’s hope they like birds.

A woman on the Gatwick train sits with her feet slightly rocking outwards on the floor, like a scary book being cautiously opened by a child.

Two strangers beside each other on the train lean in the same direction on their chairs to sleep - like flowers bending towards the sun.

Just walked past a man in a Stetson finishing the last of a packet of 8 plain popadoms and a bottle of ginger beer. Good morning.

Woman (having just cycled up to the open door of a bakery): Hello! Do you have any cake left?
Voice from inside: Yes.
Woman: Thank God.

A little boy on the train plays ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ with his grandmother in what I think is Korean. They match more than they differ, which keeps making them break into giggles.
