If you were in prison, would you want to learn a new language? Many incarcerated people do! You can help by buying a Spanish, Arabic, or Japanese language learning book for the nonprofit @booksthroughbars.bsky.social. They'll send it to an incarcerated person.

Many things are difficult right now, but YOU can do something wonderful with just $6 or $8.

I feel like I have been looking at the same few dozen “classics” reprinted for the last 30 years.

Someone has got to start a Public Domain Publishing company that makes handsome editions of the best NEW stuff that enters the public domain every January 1.

I will give you all my money! 📚💙

Other than the scurrilous lie that the recipe makes six dozen cookies when it really only makes four, it turned out quite well.

I don’t think these photos accurately convey exactly how destroyed this cookbook is. I think I’ve owned it for going on 40 years now?

Anyway, this was the first time I’ve made this particular recipe.

Why yes, I am stress-baking because of ICE.

Happy New Year! May it be bright and sweet for all of us.

When I was digging around for those CDs, I found a mixtape I made for myself when I was in my early 20s.

Lest you think my mood was always this wistful, I also made a one of more raucous songs. But I can’t find that one.

One of my favorite New Year’s traditions is to put on some contemplative music and clean my house. I love waking up to a fresh new space.

There is a wonderful children's book on exactly this theme. BENJAMIN'S 365 BIRTHDAYS, by Judi Barrett.

I got this one for a books-to-prisoners program. Apparently they’re always on the lookout for books on this topic that don’t foster white nationalism. 🤯

This one isn’t at the top of the Reddit thread for best books on the topic, but it also doesn’t seem to be super problematic (phew).

Another gift book; this one for another teenager. I think they’ll appreciate something that involves them in the story.

MISS WINTER IN THE LIBRARY WITH A KNIFE, by Martin Edwards. 📚💙

I was kind of tickled to find out that THE ENDURANCE is still getting widely recommended, many years after its first publication.

Giving both the Alfred Lansing narrative nonfiction AND the illustrated Caroline Alexander book to my favorite 17-year-old.

This is a typically gorgeous Dorling Kindersley (DK) book. Picked it up for the three-year-old and six-year-old in my life.

To be honest, the prose is a little didactic. But the visuals make up for it. Look at this lil’ ol’ fennec fox! 📚💙

This one is also from @haymarketbooks.org . I got it as an automatic shipment because of my monthly book club membership. Interesting topic, though I don’t know a thing about this particular book or author. I plan to flip through before giving it to a friend who is very interested in abolition. 📚💙

Got this as a gift, either for a nephew or my brother. Love to see a novel in translation. And what a subtitle!

The inimitable @tressiemcphd’s THICK is on my TBR because — although I dipped in and out of it and read numerous essays individually — I have never sat down and read the whole thing from front to back.

I maintain that “Girl 6”is worth the price of the whole thing just by itself. 📚

This book is just out from @haymarketbooks.org. I snapped it up based on the title alone: SOLIDARITY WITH CHILDREN. Excited to dig in.

By Madeline Lane-McKinney, on sale now at Haymarket for 40% off! Just $12 for BOTH paperback and e-book together. 📚💙

This one has been on my TPR pile for almost a year. Not because it’s not a great story, but because my brain is very slow to bounce back-and-forth between words and pictures, and this is a graphic novel.

It has beautifully clear lettering, in case you are buying for those with low vision. 📚💙

This book isn’t on my TBR pile, but I bought it as a gift for one of my favorite teenagers. This was one of the things they made me read in college that I actually ended up really liking. Not always agreeing with, but liking. 📚💙

True Philadelphians will recognize how the card at left plays on the infamous SEPTA slogan “We’re Getting There.”

I forgot to highlight these cards. Just absolutely loving the lettering type here. Whatever retro this is, it’s my kind of retro.

Got these three beauties courtesy of Making Worlds Bookstore, which seems to be sharing booth space at Love Park with Immigrant Marché (?).

Locally made candles? My sisters will love them! Hat tip Baisun Candle Co for outstanding scents like Vietnamese Coffee, Yuzu, and Lychee Red Tea. He’s at the Wanamaker building if you want to stop in. #giftguide #whyilovephilly
