Excellent column. Unfortunately, there is no easy way back. But both sides should at least consider a customs union, and coordinate closely on security and defence. Most importantly, we need a sense of urgency. Some countries have it. Germany and the U.K. are both too complacent, in different ways.

I've currently got 17k followers on X and 700 here. But I'll be posting more here than there, for the same reason that I'd rather go for a walk through a nice park than trudge through a filthy swamp. And hopefully those follower numbers will gradually climb.
