Every time an ADULT asks me “what tribe are you?”, I first squeeze my face to communicate that i think I’ve been asked a dumb question and then I respond with “oh my ethnicity? I’m Yoruba 😊”. Because PLEASE

I say carelessly because had we self determined, folks would better understand Yorubaland, for example, which spanned across what we now call south west Nigeria, Benin, Togo etc. instead we think “Yoruba=Nigeria” & you therefore can’t be ethnically Yoruba if you’re from Togo 💔

Lord Luggard and his band of barbarians weren’t interested in the differneces between people in the area he carelessly designated as “Nigeria”. Classing ethnic groups as tribes was & is a deliberate effort to undermine the broad & complex social & cultural characterics of Africans in general.

Yoruba, for example, is an ETHNIC GROUP, with a unique haplogroup different to that of Hausa’s, Igbos etc. there are tribes WITHIN the Yoruba ethnicity such as Ijebu (I’m ijebu).

I say all that to say this, people don’t like to focus on their actual enemy when it’s easier to claw at a neighbour.

Reminds me of the time Southies launched a campaign to have a half Nigerian, half Southie competitor in the Miss SA competition removed because she “isn’t South African”. A white woman won the crown. That was acceptable to them.

This isn’t America and he’s not white. His career will never bounce back and for that, I have to say, I am proud to be British 🇬🇧
