Reading these two. Weirdly reading the Spanish rather than the English translation of Zweig and reading the English translation from the Spanish of Quintana's novel.

Finished the move to the new apartment, bringing the last of the plants. Still in Malaga Centro but on a smaller, quieter street.

It's coming up on two years of living in Spain. I take two private Spanish classes and two group classes a week (it's fun!). I listen to news podcasts in Spanish and read several pages from a novel in Spanish every day (it's elucidating!) So why am I still stumbling and bumbling when I speak?

Went to this bar in the Malasãna neighborhood in Madrid, a place frequented by Almodóvar during the movida madrileña when he was in his twenties. The demographic of the bar is still the same and since I'm nearly the same age as Almodóvar I was surely the oldest person in the room.

It was a very fine day and even finer night in Madrid. Here's the view from the azotea del Círculo de Bellas Artes.

Happy New Year! Resolve to take the stage—like our granddaughter did at this concert.

The other day at the cat cafe the best seats were taken.

Momentary sing-along fail. Later the good times did roll at Café Central, Madrid.

I'm reading Sigrid Nunez's book What Are You Going Through in Spanish. Almodovar based his latest film on this book.

I walked to the gym this morning, forgetting it was closed due to the holiday (Día de la Constitución Española) so I walked to the beach to see the sunrise.

Another tribute to and awareness raising about women murdered by domestic violence in Málaga Centro last night.

Today I spent an hour at the Festival de Novela Negra. I’ve read very little noir (none in Spanish). I went to test my Spanish comprehension. But with the echoing of the amplified voices, I came away with casi nada. Yet, what a pleasure to be in a room full of people interested in books.

Tonight in Calle Alcazabilla in Málaga Centro, a display of the names of women murdered by their partners. A remembrance and a raising of awareness of domestic violence in Spain.

I went to a Democrats Abroad meeting today in Málaga. Many were sharing messages of hope, but I’m just not there. Had to remove myself from the circle and join another woman who had also separated from the group. We are both brown women. We're safe here but fear that many people in America won't be.

Writing as a collective act. Three writers respond to each other on nature, time, and the world around us. It's my killing-two-birds-with-one-stone attempt to advance my Spanish while appreciating the insights of these writers. Not exactly killing it. But plugging steadily along.

After yesterday's torrential rains in Málaga that flooded many streets, I walked to the beach at dawn this morning.

Yesterday I saw the new Almodóvar film, his first in English, though here in Spain it's called La habitación de al lado. It's based on Sigrid Nunez's book What Are You Going Through, a favorite of mine. The Spanish version is Cuál es tú tormento, which I quite like.
