I'm sure you've read Robert Altemeyer's "The Authoritarians," indeed fascinating. The right's capture of religious folk - most who had already self-selected themselves into church because of their authoritarian personality type - was genius, with terrifying results for the rest of us.

Then there are the terrible "Double Highs", who while also being very right-wing authoritarian, are also power-hungry social dominators who excel at exploitation, prejudice, and manipulation. Sound familiar?
