Sometimes, depending on the context, it can actually be counterintelligence. It’s the same infrastructure that you would use to make sure that people aren’t abusing the data. It’s how you would also make sure that you don’t have a spy in your organization. Douthat: In the end, though, it is up to the people running those institutions to decide whether to track abuses at all. Sankar: That’s right. Douthat: So it might be at different levels and different agencies. But presumably, in the Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem would have the authority to track or not track abuses to some degree? Sankar: I mean, yes. I think that’s a little bit of a nihilistic view.

Sankar: That’s right. I’ve started a film-production company to make content that makes you proud to be an American. Not Pravda Entertainment, but a lot of this was built on my own assimilation journey. So when I came to the U.S. in the early ’80s, I would sit on the couch with dad and watch “Rambo III” and “Rocky IV” and “Hunt for Red October” — Douthat: “War Games” and “Terminator 2”? Just throwing those out there — those two. Sankar: “Star Trek.” I’ll offer you some optimistic sci-fi. Douthat: Yes. Sankar: But also things that reflect comedy, like “Beverly Hills Cop.” There’s a sense of heroism. It’s not just about war movies. It’s about: What is the American spirit? Shyam Sankar continues: "I like to say, as a 5-year-old, I knew what it felt like to be an American before I knew civics or our political philosophy or our history, and I think that feeling is really important. It explains why people went back to the theater to see “Top Gun: Maverick” over and over again. Obviously, they already knew the plot the second time around, but the feeling is really important. A lot of our content right now is filled with a little bit of self-loathing, maybe a lot of nihilism — a sense that America is a force for bad in the world. Sometimes it’s subtle, sometimes it’s not so subtle. We’ve been here before as a country — in Vietnam, essentially. We had a lot of movies that felt this character arc of self-loathing. It’s actually the reason that George Lucas made “American Graffiti” in ’73. He was tired of it. He just wanted to make a movie about boys chasing girls driving cars. It was the palate cleanser that set the tone for the big pump-up movies of the late ’70s and ’80s that we’ve just been talking about here." The interview concludes: I think they are really powerful stories to be told. There’s a great opportunity to tell a story on the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 that has nothing to do with terrorism or planes flying to the building, per se — but to focus on a very, what I view as quintessentially American story: the nine everyday New Yorkers who went to work that day and were courageous. They motivated each other to get 12,000 souls out of that building in the 102 minutes between the first strike and the towers collapsing. All of our narratives of this tend to focus on the 2,000 or so folks we lost, which is a grave tragedy, but even in our worst moment, that’s the best of us. What is it that we want to communicate to our children that being American means? I think that’s really important. Douthat: All right, on that patriotic note: Shyam Sankar, thanks so much for joining me. Sankar: Thanks for having me, Ross.

Actually I think Mike Flood gets off on lying to his constituents. It occurred to me that he has a control/deception kink and now I can't unsee it.

I really liked the book The 5 languages of apology. It made sense to me that people can be looking for different things in an apology.

A non-apology like "I'm sorry you had that experience." is a more serious bad behavior.

It's a great gift to have an adult model apology. It's an invaluable skill

By Hannah Natanson, Jeremy Roebuck and Rachel Siegel Representatives for the U.S. DOGE Service have received permission to access a highly sensitive Justice Department system that contains information including the addresses and case history for millions of legal and undocumented immigrants, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post. The system — the Executive Office for Immigration Review’s Courts and Appeals System, or ECAS — is used to store records of immigrants who have interacted with the U.S. immigration system, detailing their name, any addresses, previous immigration-court testimony and any history of engagement with law enforcement, among other things. The Justice Department’s website states that “ECAS supports the full life cycle of an immigration case” by maintaining “all records and case-related documents in electronic format.” A team of roughly a half-dozen DOGE “advisors” placed at the Justice Department won approval from senior officials at the agency on Friday to access the ECAS system, according to the documents reviewed by The Post. Justice Department staff were instructed to begin preparing ECAS accounts for the DOGE team, the documents show, including former hedge fund staffer Adam Hoffman as well as Payton Rehling and Jon Koval, both of whom work at a private equity firm tied to Elon Musk. The team also includes Marko Elez, who resigned from the government in February after the Wall Street Journal linked him to a social media account that had made racist posts. He was rehired after Musk dismissed the significance of the posts.
