Cool, that helps me a lot with picking out pictures for my Anki cards. For my image for aufmüpfig, I picked an image of a kid being a brat, and for widerspenstig I picked some unruly hair.

If I look at Youglish I get a similar story, aufmüpfig describing children, dogs, etc. and widerspenstig describing materials that are difficult to work with (such as hair, wood, etc.) as well as also sometimes describing people.

For aufmüpfig, we see lots of words for children, teenager etc. This tells me a couple things. This is used commonly for people, and in particular, people who don't obey, but not necessarily in a serous malicious way.

For widerspenstig, I'm seeing less people, and a lot of hair. Like unruly hair.

This is where it helps to look at monolingual sources to figure out what the appropriate context for these words are.

DWDS gives this word chart thing that shows the most commonly associated words.

To me, these definitions mean pretty close to the same things. I have some preconceived notions about what the differences might be. But its important to recognize that the translations aren't perfect.

Let's look at the words "aufmüpfig" and "widerspenstig". If I go to a German->English dictionary I get:

widerspensitg - stubborn, unmanageable
aufmüpfig - rebellious

(with timestamp here youtu.be/2b5F22wL1K8?...) He specifically talks about using related words to put new vocab in context. He doesn't go in to exact detail about how to work this into Anki or whatnot so that's where I'm going to pick up here with a bit of a case study.
