It did. This has been simmering under the surface since our country was founded, and every so often they shove some asshole into the center of it because he'll let them do what they want. It's absolutely pathetic and so harmful. Nobody benefits from it and nobody learns any lessons from it.

They will never grow tolerance or even a wider perspective. Individuals might, but not as a whole. The tribalism runs too deep. Can't consider other ways, that takes too much effort, too much thought. Can't be inconvenienced. They're comfortable where and how they are, why fight that? Why risk

else in the world feels like a threat to them - holidays that aren't Christmas, foods they didn't grow up with, hair colors that aren't natural - skin that isn't white. Their inexperienced brains register different as a threat, as a danger. And danger must be exterminated.

Because they don't recognize it as such. They're so desperate to hang on to anything that they're familiar with that everything else becomes abnormal, amoral, wrong, and a threat. They live out their lives terrified to be the outcasts, the minority, the ones not in power. Literally everything
