Well, let's turn this around. Suppose we were to learn that there is indeed a God, but - It - doesn't respond to any individual's prayers. How many people of faith would then say "God doesn't matter"?

A lot of historians will read that simplistically as sober with piety without considering it may have been sober with sarcasm. But your point remains a very substantive one nevertheless.
